Can the all-new Volvo EX60 live up to the "game-changer" hype ?
The term “game-changer” is used often -and often whatever it is doesn’t really live up to the lofty title bestowed upon it.
However – that is about to change as the covers come off the all-new Volvo EX60 — a mid-size electric SUV aimed right in the heart of the EV market (think XC60-sized, but fully electric), and besides anything else it’s largely because of one headline number: up to 503 miles WLTP in its longest-range form.
It seems the market has coveted such a range as the magic number that transforms perception of electric vehicles and their practicality for everyday modern – and now it has it.
What is the Volvo EX60?
The EX60 is Volvo’s next-volume electric SUV, built on the brand-new SPA3 platform with an 800V electrical architecture designed for faster charging and improved efficiency. In top spec, Volvo claims it can add up to 211 miles in 10 minutes when plugged into a 400kW rapid charger in best case conditions.
It also brings Volvo’s next-gen “core computing” approach, leaning heavily into software, over-the-air updates and Google-powered infotainment features.
Why does 500+ miles range matter?
It’s not a small, lightweight urban EV – it’s a proper family size SUV equivalent to the petrol, diesel and plug-in XC60 that has graced UK roads since 2017.
503 miles WLTP is the attention-grabber and of course only reserved for the range topping battery – but the entry and mid-range models are also offering a very respectable range of 385-410 miles which should satisfy most considerations
What are the experts saying?
Autocar have gone so far as to call it a “game-changer” because Volvo is bringing 500+ miles WLTP into a more accessible, mainstream part of the market. The Verge frames the EX60 as a wider “reset” moment for Volvo’s EV strategy, with the new platform and manufacturing approach intended to improve efficiency and profitability not just range. And Volvo itself is positioning the EX60 as a step that “turns range anxiety into range comfort – not the catchiest of catch-phrases but they probably have a valid point !
The EX60’s range has just eclipsed that of the new BMW iX3 arriving in the UK next month – albeit by only a few miles but it does put them in top spot and means leaves BMW and Volvo head and shoulders above the rest in terms of range in the premium SUV sector – are we now going to see further advances to eclipse them both as 2026 progresses ?

When is the Volvo EX60 expected to arrive in the UK?
Volvo has not yet confirmed a precise UK on-sale date, but early indications suggest the EX60 will be revealed in full during 2026, with first customer deliveries likely in 2027. As with most new-generation EV platforms, there will be a staged rollout, starting with higher-spec models before wider availability follows. How much is the Volvo EX60 likely to cost?
Pricing hasn’t been officially announced, but based on Volvo’s current line-up and the technology involved, the EX60 is expected to sit above the EX30 and EX40, and broadly in line with premium mid-size electric SUVs. Realistically, that suggests a starting price in the region of £55,000–£60,000, with higher-range and higher-spec models moving into the £65,000–£75,000+ bracket. Will the EX60 really achieve 500 miles in real-world driving?
The headline 500+ mile figure is a WLTP rating, measured in controlled test conditions. In real-world motorway use, a more realistic expectation is likely to be closer to 425-450 miles, depending on speed, weather, load and driving style. That is still exceptional for an electric SUV and puts the EX60 firmly into “long-distance capable” territory, reducing charging stops and making EV ownership easier for high-mileage drivers. -
Is the EX60 aimed at families, fleets, or both?
Both. There is a reason the XC60 has become Volvo’s biggest volume model – it sits in the bulk of the market and the EX60 is no different and designed to replace the role that the XC60 has played for years.
